GW2 Predictions
New professions? Expanded races? Micro-transactions from the beginning… Here’s what I think might happen in Guild Wars 2. These are just predictions, mostly unfounded! Take them with a grain of salt (or a bucketful!) and please, comments are very welcome.
- The Mesmer & Necromancer professions may be changed drastically, perhaps beyond recognition.
- All Nightfall & Factions professions may be removed, although their style of play will be worked into other professions.
- A Summoner/Controller profession may be introduced, combining some styles of play we now see from Necromancers’s minions, Ritualists’ spirits, and Rangers’ pets. This profession would have different options depending on the race – for example: druid, golem, machine, pet.
- The Ranger profession may be transformed to enable the use of guns for spike damage, while still making Bows a viable option for DPS or degen.
- The entire mechanics of Enchantment/Hex/Condition/Shout may be overhauled.
- Primary/secondary profession system may be replaced by Race/Profession.
- Races may bring their own racial abilities in PvP, as a result of the Race/Profession system.
- The most potent skills may be PvE-only, and your strength in using them would be a result of the choices you make in the storyline/character creation.
- Underwater combat may take place on the sea-bed. The complexity of having melee-range combat, and ranged targeting, would make swimming-combat too difficult.
- A beta may be announced, or playable, around the time of PAX 2010. Release would be scheduled for Spring 2011.
- Hall of Monuments achievements may simply add a badge to your armor, or give you access to pretty weapon skins.
- Charr players selecting a magic-using profession would have a very interesting storyline :)
- The dynamic event system would be exploitable. It would be totally different to everything you’ve seen before, however this would not make it good automatically. There will be lots of tweaking scenarios from ArenaNet.
- This time they won’t make any promises regarding “not being charged for content added to the game” (relevant to Goddess Serqet’s argument in GToB AD1 yesterday). Micro-transactions would be a part of the business model from the very beginning, principally for lazy and vain players.
- Centaurs & tengu would become playable races in the Cantha & Nightfall expansions. They will be more careful about expanding, after what happened with GW1; they are probably already planning ahead to compensate (by making key skill areas lacking).
- Each playable race may have self-heals that negate the need for dedicated healer in low-to-mid difficulty PvE. The roles of Protection & Healing may be split into different professions.
- They should be more wary of passive play – defensively & offensively. This extends to anything with a duration – Enchantments, Hexes, Stances, Shouts, and so on – or whatever their related new skill types are. I have doubts on this point, though.
- There may be integration with the website & social network(s), for example, “Post this achievement to Facebook”. This will get people to play more, and more often.
- You would either love or hate World-versus-World battles.
- Some of the variety of Heroes’ Ascent battles may be integrated into the new Guild-versus-Guild format.
- The Sidekick system may be one of the games most basic, yet outstanding features – the one that makes reviewers give glowing reviews. It would be simple and effective.
- The battle with Zhaitan would bring new meaning to the word “epic”.
- Grinding for power. The trend from Factions to Eye of the North is for PvE grinding improving skills, ultimately coming to a crisis point with Ursan Blessing, Pain Inverter & Cry of Pain. I would hope otherwise, but the trend is too much to ignore. The basic mechanic of “kill x enemies and become more powerful using y skills” will most likely pervade the game. Much to my dismay. Hopefully the PvP is totallyfrickinawesome, otherwise I will not play this game.
- Normal play through the campaign will always ensure you have appropriate skills, level & player know-how to succeed. In this respect it will be similar to GW1. Completion of the campaign (which will be very long) will almost see a character to the maximum level – perhaps 80-90% of the way. The remainder of the levels will be attainable either through completing side-quests, WvW, or some kind of farming. The top 10-20% will be seen as unnecessary, from a gameplay viewpoint – little to no effect on character potency… but plenty of people will get to max level to achieve access to pretty armor (with no gameplay bonus).
- NPC heroes – such as those we’ve seen in the Races of Tyria video – will have amazing stories and characters – enough to make you feel like you’re reading a good book or movie. A lot more emphasis is put on quality voice acting. No more “Saidra! No!”, or whatever Evennia’s voice actress spells out into the microphone.
- You will be able to guard an NPC caravan from one side of the world to the other. Epic. You gain access to NPC-faction-style armor and weapons by helping them out. Similar to the EotN race-specific items.

well it’s very late, no i haven’t slept yet, mate, BUT, I wanted to comment on what a dashingly handsome mezmer you have captured in that screenshot!
Good night!!
I like that mask you’re wearing. That was a memorable vanquish the three of us did. The first couple of deaths happened because I was too busy posting this article :D
I found your post fairly intriguing and posted a reply to your predictions.
Is it me or is trying to guess what they’re going to do fun in itself?
1. mmh i found the mesmer proffesion one of the most original ever, let’s be honest: what other mmorpg has something like a mesm???
Don’t see how they would change the necro;..It’s impossible lorewise cause each prof is linked to its god (except for ele and the expansion proffesions) And seeming that Grenth is the god of death, it seems difficult to “drastically” change the necro; though a fusion between necro and rit is likely.
2. So rit + necro
I could see the paragon being fused with warrior easily
assasin with the ranger or the warrior
and derv with the monk or the warrior
According to me that seem to be the most the likeable.
3. mmh dont think so;
The idea of a summoner is already implented in gw2 in some way.
The norn can shapeshift into an animal
The asura can “summon” golems
So i dont think the idea of a summoner profession is likely
4. yep, that’s indeed likely and halfly confirmed
Cause muskets will make their appearance in gw2 (besides the guns of the charr)
5. *sad* that would degrade the gw combat system, but possible
Could also be replaced offcourse.
6. Don’t think so cause you wouldn’t be able to change ur proffesion then, and changing ur primary proffesion would degrade the lore, it’s more likely that it stays race/prim prof/sec prof.
Remember that the ability to change ur secondaryprof was a gift in gw we don’t want to lose.
7. likely indeed
8. I can see u are referring to the title skills of Gw1? It’s indeed likely that we will have this kind of skills.
9. true, that being said I could also see the possibilities of underwater raids/dungeons
10. Sure hope so
11. HOM achievements would add something that wouldnt chabnge ur effectivness in combat or in the world, so indeed a badge or skin seems likely
12. Weren’t the magic users (the golden legion if im correct) the enemies of the other legions? and therefore encountered enemies in the persistent world? and seeming that there wasnt horde/alliance it seems unlikely.
13. yep, can’t see how it would be possible elsewise
14. i see…
15. tengu for the cantha expansion and centaurs for the elona expansion….possible indeed.
16. mmh intresting idea, nothing to add though
17. I am sure they learned their lessons out of gw1
18. Not confirmed, neither mentioned, but intresting idea. Although..won’t it corrode the immersive part of the gameplay?
19. Not sure, seeing that there are a lot of things to do in WvW play and there might be something for everyone.
20. likely
21. I sure hope so :D
22. Yep, Hope they don’t do it in the same way as the battle with abaddon though which wasnt really epic…
23. Ive never really saw a quest in Gw that mentioned killing x enemies. The quests in gw are all fairly original, Grinding for power should indeed be evaded. though I like the title system :p
24. I think its more likely to achieve only 40% of the mx lvl in the camp play through, and adding HM,and side quests you would only reach 60%. (something like that) So that the mx lvl is not easily reachable, but not necessary to reach except for some cool stuff (like u mentioned). Otherwise people would just begin whining again that the max lvl is too easily accesable…
25.Sure hope so :D
26. same as 25 :p
Phew…so that was my opinion..Thnx for reading!!
Resk
Given GW1’s combat system melee combat doesn’t get more complex at all with 3 axis. Currently you click or tab to a target, press space, and your toon autopaths to it’s target. Given this it really doesn’t mater if you’re moving in 3D or on a plane.
Dodgeball during dragonfest??? HA! Let’s get ready for Blitzball!
This list is lil scarry, don’t you think? Few things that were unique in GW would get removed by some borring WoW system crap.
What was unique in GW? You haven’t had to spend hours till you got lvl 20. Sure you still got no idea how to play good, but your char was ready so far. I don’t want to spend hours on some borring pve map, killing monsters for levels or rank or whatever. I played just pvp the last year, and I got a pve char from lvl 1 to pvp ready in just some days.
The summoner idea isn’t that stupid. Actually I like it in some ways. I would like a class that could summon the race specific monsters. But thats neether realistic for pve nor for pvp. In pvp they would probably be too strong and I think anyway this monsters will be somekind of pve skill.
Is it aprooved, that there will be expansions in GW2 like in GW?
Take away the mesmer would be fatal, because it’s the favorite class of many good players.
And hell no, spring 2011 is much too far. Work harder ANet.
But the way It will release in 2 noember 2010. Just check on gamestop.com and search it.
That’s a placeholder date, they aren’t real dates.
I bet you.If it will release. You’ll lose.
Quite a few online retailers put up release dates.
NO RELEASE DATE HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED!
Hristin is right :\
http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=75863
When Gamestop (or any other online game store) puts a game into their system, they probably have to define a date.
It might be a technical requirement.
It’s more likely intended to get people excited and to place pre-orders way too early.
This comes up almost every week over at GWG forums, and the answer is always the same:
“No official release date has been announced.”
And until I see either NCSoft or ArenaNet say, “Guild Wars 2 will be released on [date],” then every single site out there is simply making guesses.
